The Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience (IHRR) at Durham University hosted an event on 'Bridging the Gap between Research and Practice' for early career scientists on 24 October 2023.

Dr Ellen Robson, a research associate at the Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience (IHRR) at Durham University, has co-authored a publication with colleagues at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi on rainfall-triggered landslides in the Himalayas in 'The Conversation'.

Dr Rebekah Harries, a research associate at the Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience (IHRR), has published an article in Geomorphology that investigates how persistent climate patterns impact mountain river morphology and explores the implications for how sensitively different rivers may respond to future climatic change.

A mini-conference was held online on 9 September 2023 on “Responding to Major Disasters: decision informed from the Theory and Practice of Operations/(al) Research” with all proceeds going towards the relief of sufferers from the devastating Earthquake in Turkey & Syria.

A one-day workshop on exploring feminist futures through care, urban planning, and leadership took place on 8 September 2023 at Palace Green, Durham University, organised by Dr Hanna Ruszczyk (Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience, IHRR, Durham University, and Gender Responsive Resilience and Intersectionality in Policy and Practice, GRRIPP) and Dr Emma Ormerod (Newcastle University).

A new grant of £96k has been awarded by British Academy/Royal Academy of Engineering/Royal Society for interdisciplinary research “Exploring the feasibility of regenerating Medieval Licchavi Period irrigation infrastructure in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal”

Dr Bhim Kumar Dahal visited the IHRR for two weeks in July 2023 to collaborate with Dr Ellen Robson and Prof David Toll on the development of road cut slope design guidelines for Nepal.

Dr Aaron Neill, research associate within the Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience (IHRR) at Durham University, was invited to give a lecture at the River University 2023 course held from 31 July to 4 August in Kutzow See, Oder delta, Germany, co-organised by Coalition Clean Baltic and Rewilding Oder Delta.
