New Writing North and Durham University were delighted to announce their inaugural Translator in Residence in March 2022. The year-long residency, which runs from April to March, was founded by literary translators Ros Schwartz and Daniel Hahn, with support from Arts Council England. The aim is to develop activities such as workshops, talks and public engagement projects which encourage an interest in literary translation and translated literature and foster the valuing of languages among communities in and around Durham and the North of England.
Our first translator-in-residence is Ruth Clarke, a literary translator from Italian, French and Spanish who has co-founded the Starling Bureau literary translators’ collective, mentored for the British Council’s Translation Fellowship programme, and promoted literary translation at events such as the Crossing Border Festival, London Book Fair and International Translation Day.
