An elderly lady's hands

In January 2025, the UK Parliament’s Science, Innovation and Technology Select Committee launched a call for submissions to inform the next priority areas for its work.

This inquiry, entitled Under the Microscope, invited public, business, and expert groups to help shape future government policies in science and technology. In response, the International Consortium to Classify Ageing-Related Pathologies (ICCARP) including Professor Paul Chazot (representing Durham University WRIHW), submitted evidence to the committee to draw attention to the challenges posed by an increasing ageing population, both in the UK and globally, and the need for systematic and comprehensive classification and staging of ageing-related pathologies to prepare healthcare systems to meet these challenges. This submission, presented on behalf of the ICCARP, highlights the consortium’s ongoing collaborations between its sixteen specialist working groups of over 300 clinical and scientific experts, to develop classifications for submission to the United Nation’s World Health Organization (WHO).
