The Rio Teno River, and Rebekah Harries presenting data

[06/24] The Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience (IHRR) and colleagues from Durham University undertook fieldwork on the Rio Teno.

Dr Rebekah Harries from IHRR and Dr Elizabeth Orr from the department of Geography at Durham University have undertaken fieldwork on the Rio Teno, one of Chile's few undammed rivers

The fieldwork included:

Community-Led Monitoring: Collaborating with local residents to install a timelapse camera on the river. The goal is to test the locals' hypothesis that the colour changes in the river may indicate different sediment erosion locations and patterns within the catchment.

Storm Impact Analysis: Investigating how a sequence of different storm events over the past year have driven geomorphological changes and sediment cascades in the Rio Teno since our last visit in August 2023.

Sediment tracing: Quantifying changes in riverbed sediments through time to determine when and how far coarse sediment travels downstream and what impact this has on the morphology of channels downstream in habited areas.
