Earthquake in Turkey

A mini-conference was held online on 9 September 2023 on “Responding to Major Disasters: decision informed from the Theory and Practice of Operations/(al) Research” with all proceeds going towards the relief of sufferers from the devastating Earthquake in Turkey & Syria.

The Heads of the Operational Research and Analytics Forum (HORAF) and the Committee of Professors in Operational Research in the UK (COPIOR), active bystanders and gatekeepers of the Operational Research (OR) discipline in the UK, decided to help those affected by the earthquake in Turkey-Syria by organising a mini-conference. The conference was inspired by a talk by Prof. Sridhar Tayur (Carnegie Mellon University) on how OR can help us decide what to do first after a major disaster.

Keynotes were provided by Prof. Sridhar Tayur, Prof. Sridhar Seshadri (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), Prof. Emel Aktas (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), Prof. Nezih Altay (DePaul University), Prof. Dilek Onkal (Northumbria University), with an opening from COPIOR Chair Prof. Konstantinos Nikolopoulos (Forecasting Laboratory Director for the Institute of Hazard, Risk, and Resilience, IHRR at Durham University) and closing from the HORAF Chair Mr. Nick Harris. More details on the conference programme can be found here

All proceeds went to Turkey-Syria earthquake appeal | British Red Cross or a charity of the participants' choice (proof of donation was used as the registration).
