As part of Durham Global Week, the annual celebrations of global culture, the Physics Department offers an exciting public talk, by our alumnus Dr. Joseph Bullock, now working as Tech Lead of the United Nation's Peacekeeping operations.
Dr Joseph Aylett-Bullock (Tech Lead, UN Department of Peace Operations)"Digital innovation in times of crisis"Wednesday 28 February, 5pm, Physics Dept Room 8
We live in an era of increasing crises from natural disasters to conflict. These crises are no longer isolated, but are becoming increasingly interlinked. Emergency responders, humanitarians, and peacekeepers need access to timely and accurate information to inform responses to these situations and anticipate future ones. Digital innovation, specifically through the use of data science, mathematical modelling and machine learning, offers the potential to piece apart and reconstruct these complexities to enhance data-informed decision-making. This presentation will discuss how digital innovation for crisis response is evolving and being approached at international organisations such as the United Nations. This will include examples of previously deployed data science projects in response to crises such as forced displacement, flooding, and disinformation campaigns which threaten the safety and security of communities.Joseph's CV: 2023-present: Tech Lead, Information Integrity Unit, UN Department of Peace Operations 2022-2023: Data Science and AI Team Lead, UN Global Pulse, Executive Office of the UN Secretary-General 2021-present: Research Advisor, RiskEcon Lab for Decision Metrics, Courant Institute for Mathematical Sciences, New York University 2021-present: Scientific Advisor, Numerati Partners 2021-2022: Research Scientist, UN Global Pulse, Executive Office of the UN Secretary-General 2019-2021: Senior Research Analyst, UN Global Pulse, Executive Office of the UN Secretary-General 2018-2021: Industry Research Associate: RiskEcon Lab for Decision Metrics, Courant Institute for Mathematical Sciences, New York University 2018-2021: Affiliated Expert, Numerati Partners 2018-2019: AI Research Fellow, UN Global Pulse, Executive Office of the UN Secretary-General 2018 (2 months): Researcher, IBEX Innovations
