About Us

Our teaching is excellent

Based on our broad range of world-leading research, we provide flexible and engaging degrees that allow our students to experience the full fascination of the subject. Our courses follow a modular structure which allows for a great deal of flexibility. We offer many advanced projects based on our broad research portfolio. All of our programmes are accredited by the Institute of Physics.

According to the government's Teaching Excellence Framework, Durham University delivers consistently outstanding teaching, learning and outcomes for its students. It is of the highest quality in the UK. We are ranked 2nd in the 2023 Guardian University Guide and 6th in the Complete University Guide 2023.

Our research is excellent

We are one of the top Physics Departments in the UK for research, as recognised in repeated assessments and league tables. According to REF2021, 96% of Durham research was considered to be “world leading” or of an “internationally excellent quality” placing use 7th in the UK when the size of our research base is considered.

An inspiring and supportive learning environment

We have a good staff-to-student ratio and our friendly staff offer an open-door policy and small-group tutorials. Your project will be individually-supervised in our cutting-edge research groups.

In our drive to provide an inclusive and diverse environment for all our students and staff we have attained Juno Champion and Athena SWAN Silver status.

The Technician Commitment

The Department and University as a whole is a signatory to the Technician Commitment, a sector-wide, collaborative initiative led by the Science Council and supported by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation’s Technicians Make It Happen campaign.

The Commitment aims to ensure visibility, recognition, career development, and sustainability for technical staff working in higher education and research, across all disciplines.

In line with this, we aim to enhance skills and career development for technical staff, recognising their integral and invaluable role in the continued successful delivery of high-quality teaching and research on the global stage.
