Former DUHC standout and Welsh International Rebecca Daniel was selected for the Team GB Olympic cycle squad to begin training for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, California. Daniels is a prime example of the elite athletes the hockey club has consistently produced.
Alumna Rebecca Daniel has been selected for Team GB’s next Olympic cycle in women’s hockey.
Rebecca Daniel (Sport, Health & Exercise, Collingwood College, 2019-22) has marked a significant step towards representing Great Britain at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. She was selected at the start of December after impressing during Great Britain Hockey’s ‘Talent Confirmation’ phase. She will now form part of an elite squad preparing for the next Olympic Games.
‘We are all incredibly proud’
Rebecca studied Sports Science while here in Durham, and was a stand-out member of our Hockey Club. She played a pivotal role in securing the 2020 British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) national championship. This historic achievement also featured her current Team GB teammate, Fiona Crackles, who participated in her second Olympics over the summer.
Rebecca played for Wales as a member of the senior squad at the same time as attending Durham. Highlights include representing Wales in the 2021 Junior World Cup, and progressing to compete in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
After her graduation, she continued her involvement with Team Durham and our Hockey Club in a graduate sabbatical role. She now plays for Clifton Robinsons hockey club.
'We are all incredibly proud to see Rebecca's recent success in being included in the Los Angeles 2028 GB centralised squad. She is such a committed, resilient individual and very astute in her understanding of the game. It has been fantastic to play a part in her development, both as a person and as a hockey player, across her time at Durham.’
Gareth Weaver-Tyler (Team Durham Deputy Head of Sport, previous DUHC Head Hockey Coach)
What’s next?
With four Durham alumni having competed in the Paris 2024 Olympics, Rebecca’s success cements our reputation for producing world-class athletes. She will now train with the rest of the squad in a centralised programme at Bisham Abbey national sports centre.
We look forward to supporting her on her well-deserved global stage. Congratulations Rebecca!
