Alex Keay, Team Durham's Senior Rugby Union Coach, is retiring from his role after 12 successful years of leading both the men’s and women's programmes at Durham University. After recent hip replacement surgery, Alex has decided that now is the right time to step away.
In addition to his on-field coaching, Alex has worked very effectively with a wide range of external partners, stakeholders and friends. Perhaps the strongest example of this is the close working relationship that Alex forged with many of our rugby alumni community who have, and continue, to contribute a great deal to rugby at Durham.
Alex has quoted, “It has been a wonderful honour and great privilege for me to coach both men’s and women’s rugby at Durham – the best university clubs in the world. I have coached some wonderful players and have made friends for life. I believe I leave Durham University Rugby in a stronger place than I found it. I wish all of the current teams, players and coaches continued success for this and all future seasons.’’
Simon Culley, Interim Coach, will continue to lead the coaching programme at Durham and will be a key point of contact. We will now begin a search and recruitment process for a permanent replacement.
We are sure that you will join us in wishing Alex all the very best for his retirement.
