Leaving a Legacy to St John's

Making a will is a time for reflection about your personal legacy and an opportunity to make a lasting impact. Including a gift to St John’s in your will is a powerful investment in the next generation of students, in tomorrow’s leaders formed by the community and values of St John’s.

Legacies, large or small, are vital to the future of St John’s, enabling us to be an independent recognised College within Durham University – a gift that we have received from history and a gift that can make a profound difference to transforming lives for good. A legacy gift can therefore not only sustain the College but more importantly change the world.

Legacy gifts can help practically in many ways, such as providing much needed student scholarships, supporting the estate, including new capital projects, and building up the College's resilience for the future. The quote below is from one student recipient of the Leadbeater Award, a scholarship created thanks to a generous legacy donation from alumnus Gordon Leadbeater.

This award has been an incredible help to my family over what has been one of the most difficult and complicated years of my life so far. Studying at a prestigious university as a low income and first generation student can be difficult and this award has helped me so much throughout this time. Thank you so incredibly much for creating the Leadbeater Award, as it is truly life changing for students like me.

Guidance for leaving a legacy

It helps us to know your wishes for any gift you intend to give – if you are considering naming St John's in your will, or have already done so, we would be very pleased to be in touch. The best way to support St John’s is to make an unrestricted gift, which gives St John’s the freedom to allocate your gift to the area of highest need.  Of course, we welcome any expression of wishes you might make which could direct your gift to a specific area and projects, as exemplified in our Fundraising Priorities

A legacy to St John’s College should refer to the College by its full official title.

Official title: 'St John’s College, Durham'
