The research seminar titled "Chinese Rules and Procedures for Addressing Mass Actions" was presented by Dr. Cong-rui Qiao, Founder and Director of Law4Sustainability.
CCLP Reading Group
Dr Qiao's presentation illuminated China's governance framework and its evolving approach to addressing mass actions from a juridification account. Her research detailed the mechanisms employed by legislative, administrative, and judicial authorities to handle collective grievances since the 1980s. Dr Qiao's work looks at the news coverage of government responses to mass actions and provides valuable insights to advance our understanding of public accountability in China.
The discussion, led by Dr Zhiyu Li, Dr Ge Chen and Ms Zhuoyi Shen, highlighted the historical roots and development of the Chinese legal system. Participants examined the complex relationship between law and politics in the Chinese context, moving beyond traditional liberal theoretical frameworks. The dialogue drew on various historical contexts to discuss central-local dynamics in Chinese governance.
