New 2023 Art-Science Collaboration Funding

2023, the second year of BSI Create, brought new participants and new ways of forming connections. Our Art-Science collaboration scheme brings together creatives and scientists to hold conversations, without agenda (Seed scheme) and to take ideas forward to the point at which they can look for external funding (Project Building Fund). We have held this year’s Seed Conversations, and for the first time we held an online group chat to introduce creatives and scientists on the themes of perception and emotions.

In the Department of Physics, Postdoctoral and a group of PhD students from Physics took part in a workshop as part of the Spennymoor Mural Festival (image of resulting mural is below). They were introduced to Lewis Hobson from Durham Spray Paints through the Seed scheme and a second workshop and a new mural for Physics are planned for summer 2023.

Project Building Funds

Two exciting projects were funded through our Project Building scheme:

Mark Burden and Andrew Krause from Mathematical Sciences are building a collaboration around using the new website VisualPDE.com. This free website gives users interactive simulations of mathematical equations (the image above is taken from a VisualPDE.com simulation “Turing on Turing”). Andrew and Mark plan to use VisualPDE to explore Turing's ideas about biological morphogenesis - a way of describing how the spatial structure of biological organisms are formed during growth.

Helen Schell and Durham Psychology’s Ulrik Beierholm and Anthony Atkinson are working towards creating a VR simulation to explore the visual effects people might experience on the moon. An image below entitled 'The Human Spaceship - A Slice of the Moon' (Paper Collage and Paint, Size 1.10m X 1.10m, 2023 by artist, Helen Schell), gives a flavour of work by Helen.
