In August 2023, DurhamARCTIC held a 10-day summer school in the Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish areas of Sápmi. Covering topics ranging from landscape ecology to Indigenous empowerment, the summer school provided an environment where students, recent alumni, and guest lecturers learned from each other through a mix of formal presentations and impromptu encounters. Coming at the end of the PhD programme, the summer school also provided an opportunity for students and alumni to reflect on the DurhamARCTIC experiment in PhD community building, interdisciplinary conversation, and the value of sharing multiple perspectives on a place.
The summer school was led by DurhamARCTIC Director Phil Steinberg, Associate Directors Bob Baxter and Abbie Garrington, and External Advisory Board member Britt Kramvig.
In 'From Alta to Andenes' students reflect on the trip and the DurhamARCTIC experience. Additionally, in the bonus 'scrapbook' video by DurhamARCTIC alum Laura Seddon, field trip participants celebrate friendships and enjoy the spectacular Nordic landscape.
