Project description

The IAS is about to begin a long-term, joint project, with Tübingen’s College of Fellows (their IAS equivalent) on the topic of ‘Belonging’ .

The aim of the project is to allow the IAS and the College of Fellows to extend current work in this area at each university into a wider understanding of ‘Belonging’ in many forms, and from many disciplinary perspectives. Over time we hope this will attract external funding for specific projects, and further staff exchange, and the joint project will continue as long as there are funds, with the seedcorn funding work for the next two years.

 Project activities will include:

  • Staff exchange – 1 person in each direction each year for 1-2 week visit
  • Online seminars – focused this term on the topic as already established by Noam and his colleagues, but building next term into exploring wider connections and perspectives on questions of belonging
  • A hybrid workshop in summer 2025 bringing people together virtually across the two universities to explore the topic in more detail
  • An in-person conference in Tübingen in summer 2026

The joint Durham-Tübingen project on ‘Belonging’ will launch at 1pm on Thursday 17th October in the IAS seminar room, joining online with colleagues in Tübingen. Find out more here.
