We are part of a consortium that has received multiple high-value grants from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), part of the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), that will establish Durham University as a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) research in the UK.

The grants will drive forward our groundbreaking work in distributed systems, quantum computing, edge computing, and more.

Exploring foundations of next-gen AI with INFORMED-AI project

One of the awarded grants will fund Durham's role in the INFORMED-AI hub. This national consortium aims to leverage advances in information theory and distributed computing to create more effective, resilient, and trustworthy AI systems.

Durham's team will collaborate with researchers at University of Bristol, University of Cambridge, Imperial College London and beyond.

Their focus will be bridging expertise in networks and distributed systems with emerging quantum and AI technologies.

Engagement with industry partners will help translate the research into real-world impact.

The project aligns with Durham's strategic goals around interdisciplinary innovation in AI. It also links the university's strengths in networks, operations research, and quantum science.

National Edge AI Hub to tackle cyber resilience

The second grant supports Durham's participation in a £12 million national hub on edge AI, led by Newcastle University. As AI moves to edge devices, ensuring resilience to cyber-attacks becomes crucial.

Durham researchers will pioneer techniques like Hybrid Intelligence to integrate human knowledge into data-driven models. This can enhance the ability of systems to withstand disturbances.

The funding will drive collaborations with academics and industry to shape the future of edge AI.

Durham's leadership in this critical area further cements its place at the forefront of UK AI research.
