Using examples from his research and teaching career, Sam will explore inclusive ways to lead change in learning and teaching from class to module to program level built on critical pedagogy and working in partnership with students. Central in this work will be the importance of failure as an opportunity to learn from for both for students and staff.
Join us to celebrate the career and achievements of Professor Sam Nolan - the second in our series of inaugural lectures for 2022/23.
Through this lens, Sam will uncover how his own passion for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning emerged from his research and teaching work in the department of Physics, and how his own journey into becoming an academic developer stemmed from his early creative work in adult education in the Foundation Programme.
He’ll conclude by exploring the challenges and opportunities afforded to those leading change in learning and teaching through his own work on leadership in education in his recent edited volume “Leading Innovation and Creativity in University Teaching” (Nolan, S and Hutchinson, S Eds., 2022).
Sam Nolan is Deputy Director for Academic Excellence at Durham University's Centre for Academic Development, and head of DCAD's Education Lab.
Coming from rural Cumbria in the north-west of England, with a background as an Astronomer, Sam is passionate about opening up access to the University to an increasingly diverse cohort of students. He is deeply fascinated by leading change in higher education and teaches, writes and researches on this topic.
