Mission Statement

The Centre for Foreign Language Study offers courses to anyone with a desire or a need to learn a language.

The ability to speak a second (or third) language, competently if not fluently, is a huge asset. Intellectually stimulating and socially rewarding, foreign language ability is also a great asset professionally in any line of work. As a result, we have designed a language programme that serves the needs of our students and our staff, but also supports the needs of the general public and the professional sector across the northeast of England. Speaking a language is a gateway to understanding the world through the words, thoughts and cultures of others.

We offer elective language modules to students for credit as part of degree programmes across the University, as well as long and short language courses both daytime and evening.

We offer language support to researchers across the University, teaching foreign language reading skills and more conventional communicative language courses.

Our evening classes are open to members of the public.
