Welcome to the Department of Physics
The Physics Department is a thriving centre for research and education.
We are proud that our Department closely aligns the teaching and learning experience for its students with the research-intensive values and practices of the University. Research-led teaching is embedded at all levels from first year laboratory reports to our final year MPhys flagship individual research projects.
The Department incorporates the Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics, is home to the Institute for Particle Physics Phenomenology and the Institute for Computational Cosmology. The Ogden Centre is also the base for our innovative outreach programme for school children and their teachers.
Department information
The Department invites offer holders to attend one of our Post-offer Visit Days for an academic taster session. These will be ging with a Welcome Talk, and then offer-holders will be able to experience a number of typical activities that they would participate in as undergraduate students. There will be ample opportunities throughout the session to talk with both current staff and students about courses we offer.

Welcome and Introductory Talk in Ph 8 Parents are welcome to attend this talk |

14:15 – 15:45 |
Student offer-holders will undertake three different activities to see different aspects of life in the department: · Refreshments and chance to meet staff and students and find out about life as an undergraduate; · Visit our Telescopes and hear about our Astronomy Laboratories; · Experience one of our first-year undergraduate laboratories and take part in a practical session. Unfortunately, due to space limitations these sessions are limited to student applicants themselves. |

Fun Physics Lecture in Ph 8 Parents are welcome to attend this lecture should they wish |
Information for Guests of Offer-holders
Parents and guests accompanying the applicants will be welcome to attend the talks in lecture theatre Ph 8, but space limitations mean we restrict the later academic-type activities to offer-holders themselves.
