Welcome to Media at Durham

Across the university, a wide range of extracurricular student led media activities are available, ran by an ever-increasing number of societies.

With support for photography, film making, radio, journalism and audio drama, there are plenty of ways to get creative outside of your degree. Set amongst the unspoiled backdrop of County Durham, there’s always a new location to inspire you, be it rolling green hills, golden sands or winding cobbled streets.

Media activity across the university is student-led, with support from Media Durham and the Durham Students’ Union. Close ties with Music, Theatre, Tech, Sport and Volunteering provide many opportunities for collaborative projects. Many skills developed through media training are transferable to other societies, for example, creating trailers, taking headshots, and recording performances.

Outside of your university experience, the knowledge you acquire can help kickstart a career in media industries. Notable alumni in front of the camera include George Alagiah (Presenter of BBC News at 6), Charlotte Riley (Actor in Wuthering Heights and Easy Virtue) and Jeremy Vine (BBC Radio and Television presenter). Plenty of Durham graduates also play important roles behind the scenes, such as journalists, correspondents, screen writers, producers and directors.

Taking Part

Getting involved with no experience or equipment is actively encouraged. Media Durham offers free equipment hire and through societies there is plenty of training available for those who have not yet had an opportunity to pick up a camera or microphone, write a script or direct a short film.
