One of the best ways to support St John’s financially is to make an unrestricted donation, which gives St John’s the freedom to allocate your gift to the area of highest need. We also gratefully receive donations to specific areas and projects, as detailed below.
St John’s provides a unique student experience, much thanks to its student-led sports, societies, and flourishing performing arts scene. You can support a range of specific causes, sports and societies, such as St John’s Boat Club, the Bailey Theatre Company, John's Music Society, an annual event, or whichever society or sports club you were part of during your time at John's.
The Student Opportunities Fund operates thanks to the generous support of alumni and friends and makes a significant difference to the student experience of Johnians. We aim to provide current students with a range of college scholarships and bursaries for support with extra-curricular activities as well as financial hardship, allowing recipients to take part in all aspects of university and college life. Read here about the difference the Fund has made to individual students.
We know how important and formative the experience of living in College is to our students – for settling in, feeling part of the community and making friends and connections for life – yet we see more and more students choosing to live out even in their first year for financial reasons. We would like all our undergraduate students to have the choice of living in College accommodation in their first year, regardless of background and family income. Being able to offer a suite of accommodation scholarships, covering half of the accommodation fees for each scholar, will help us achieve this. We were pleased to launch the David Wilkinson First Generation Scholars Fund in 2023, offering students from first generation, BAME and low income backgrounds up to half of the accommodation costs for their first year.
Stretching back to its foundation in 1909, St John’s has been a place where Christian worship is offered, and people are taught in preparation for Christian leadership. Our mission is to serve God’s mission in the changing contexts of the UK and beyond through creative theological and practical resourcing of people preparing for, and undertaking, Christian ministry and leadership. We seek to make a distinctive contribution as a College of the University in fostering transformational teaching, learning and research.
Within a commitment to future generations, a key priority for us is to invest in the historic estate of our Bailey buildings, delivering increased accessibility, environmental sustainability and an improved student experience. We are in the planning stages of an exciting capital project.
Our College buildings have a rich history within County Durham, dating from the 12th century when our Chapel was used for prayer by the Cathedral guards, and through the Georgian period when members of the Bowes family, ancestors of the Queen mother, were residents – all before the College existed. At its establishment in 1909 the College took ownership of this significant legacy and we are committed to our responsibility as custodians to share our heritage and open our doors not just to our current students but also to the wider Durham community.
