Thank you for your interest in South College.
Durham’s Colleges are among this great University’s finest assets. They are friendly, supportive human-scale communities within the wider university. Here, Colleges welcome students and make them feel at home. They are ready-made families of people from different countries and backgrounds: warm, supportive communities in which to thrive academically and socially.
Opened in 2020, South is Durham's newest College. It has inherited this world class University's rich history and brought its own ideas to enhance a glorious tradition.
As you would expect, South already has a distinctive identity. Its foundations are based on our College motto: 'Liberty, equality and global citizenship'. Liberty refers to freedom of thought, speech and debate. Equality stresses South College's commitment to inclusion and diversity. Global citizenship emphasises our determination to welcome students from all countries and concern for the future of our planet. Our College mascot is Oswald, a carved wooden owl who represents the owl in our College crest.
Much of student life is organised by the College JCR (the Junior Common Room). South JCR organises College sports and societies and provides peer support. It also organises our weekly formal dinners and summer ball.
We have our own dedicated café-bar, library and common rooms. There is also a dedicated music practice room. The Hub, shared with John Snow College, provides space for formal dining and large-scale performances. It includes a gym and launderette.
Whatever your interests, you will find South College, a warm, friendly and supportive home in which to learn and debate ideas. South is also a great place to make friends for life. It is a community of learning, respect and fun. Of course, our accommodation really is tremendously comfortable - it is a benefit of modernity.
Professor Tim Luckhurst MA, FRSA Principal of South College
