Gabby Logan and VC

The greatest advocates for a Durham education are our global alumni community. Their experiences help us to frame our vision for the future and our understanding of what makes Durham really special.

Our Vice-Chancellor and Warden, Professor Karen O’Brien, recently met with successful sports presenter and television personality, Gabby Logan MBE (Law, College of St Hild and St Bede, 1992-95), to share some aspects of her vision for Durham, and to hear some of Gabby‘s Durham experiences. Watch the video below.

Gabby Logan meets the VC

Gabby Logan

Gabby studied law at Durham and is a keen supporter of the Durham Collegiate system, particularly at Hild-Bede. Although successfully completing her studies, it was her experiences outside the academic that shaped her future. It was whilst she was at Durham that Gabby began her career in broadcasting, as she worked part time at Metro Radio in Newcastle.

Her affection for Durham, the University, the City and the North-East of England is clear. She talks about her love of sport and the unique contribution that her college played in encouraging her to take part in sporting and cultural activities that helped her develop the skills that have become invaluable throughout her career.

The Durham experience

The opportunities that Durham can offer to students over and above academic excellence have always been at the heart of the Durham experience. The support from the College networks and the opportunity to make connections with students from different backgrounds, geographies and cultures are areas that are still as central to the University Strategy as they were when Gabby was at Durham. The Vice-Chancellor shares her perspective on the priorities for the future, on the relationship between the University and the surrounding communities and the value of the alumni community sharing their experiences with current and newly graduating students.

“Our alumni are great ambassadors for us. They advise us, they mentor our students, and they help us to appreciate how our research works in different locales” Professor Karen O’Brien
