Electric vehicles maintenance team 2024

The maintenance services teams are working hard across the University and Durham City to ensure that our buildings are safe, warm and powered, responding as quickly as possible to issues all over Durham. In doing so, the team are an essential part of every day life across the University.

To carry out this service, many of our teams need vans to carry all the equipment they need to maintain our estate. Recently, our maintenance services teams have taken delivery of several electric vehicles to help them service the University. These vehicles have replaced old, diesel-powered vehicles and will help the University work towards our ambition to deliver our mission in the most sustainable way possible. With these EVs, we will burn less diesel, reducing our scope 1 emissions in the process; our fleet vehicles were responsible for 127 tCO2 in 2022/23. We now have 22 electric vehicles that will significantly impact that figure in the years to come. The vehicles will minimise impact on air quality in the areas they travel, meaning that the University campus, and the City more generally, has air that is that much cleaner to breathe. And we have replaced old, noisy vans with quiet, sneaky electric versions!

So, thanks to our maintenance teams who ensure we can enjoy the University estate and the City, as we celebrate a big step forward in the emissions of our activities.
