The Department of Classics and Ancient History will hold a memorial lecture in honour of Professor P. J. Rhodes on Friday 9th September, 5.30-6.30pm in PG 20 in the Pemberton Rooms on Palace Green.

I am writing to share the very sad news that Professor Kevin Tipton died on the 9th January 2022.

We’re celebrating the news that two of our leading academics have been elected members of Academia Europaea in recognition of their subject-leading achievements.

We are pleased to announce that the Music Department is involved in the Sutton Trust summer schools scheme, which is designed to give bright students from under-represented backgrounds an experience of studying at a leading university.

On 23 June, Durham academics Dr Richard Wilman (Physics) and Dr Nikita Chiu (Responsible Space Innovation Centre) participated in a public panel discussion on cosmic endings and space-based threats. The event was organised by Heidelberg University's Centre for Apocalyptic and Post-Apocalyptic Studies (CAPAS) and took place after a performance of the astronomically-inspired opera “Collision”.

As we start this new year, we celebrate the achievements of over 3,000 of our students from 65 countries around the world, who have been awarded their Durham degree and graduated to join our international alumni community.

Leaders from the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT) visited our science site to learn more about our world-leading health research, teaching and facilities.

Durham University is consistently ranked among the top universities in the UK, and we are delighted to be once again ranked 6th in the UK and the top university in North East England in the latest Complete University Guide league table.

2021 has been a landmark year for UK energy and climate policy. This UK Energy Research Centre publication, co-authored by DEI Fellow Professor Gavin Bridge, reviews the key energy policies which have emerged and argues that policies in some areas need to be bolder if decarbonisation is to continue to proceed.

As a global University, with staff and students from over 120 countries, we were delighted to take part in celebrations across Durham City centre on 5 February to welcome the Year of the Tiger. This event marked a particular highlight in Durham’s varied cultural calendar.
