The decision as to whether you will follow a Joint Honours Degree or a Natural Sciences degree in two or more subjects is normally taken at the end of the first year of study. However, when considering your application we need an idea of the subjects you're planning to study to ensure you're eligible to study these.

What subjects can I study?
How do I submit my subject option choices?
Year 1
Year 2
Year 3 (or Year 4 if undertaking a placement or year abroad)
You’ll study 120 credits in total with a minimum of two and no more than four subjects.
You’ll study 120 credits in total which can be a minimum of two subjects and no more than three subjects.
You’ll study 120 credits in total in modules from at least two and no more than three subjects.
If you follow the Year Abroad or Placement Year route, you’ll be transferred onto the four-year version of your course at the end of your second year.
Available subjects for this course are split into 3 groups (see below). At least half of your studies in your second and third year must be from the subjects in Group 1.
There’s no requirement to select modules from Groups 2 or 3, but if your interests are more oriented to these groups we recommend that you consider our Combined Honours in Social Sciences or Liberal Arts courses.
Please note, not all subject combinations can be studied together.
Group 1 (subjects from Departments within Faculty of Science)
Group 2 (subjects which contribute to a Joint Honours degree within Natural Sciences from other faculties)
Group 3 (subjects which do not contribute to a Joint Honours degree within Natural Sciences)
*you’ll need to have studied specific subjects to be eligible for the starred subjects. Please check our course database entry for more information.
Depending on popularity of individual subject areas in a given year, there may be limitations to the number of offers available for certain subject choices.
There are also specific joint honours routes available through this course in which you would focus on two subjects. We guarantee these Joint Honours combinations of subjects will be available:
Please note, we also have the following joint honours courses available as stand-alone courses. If you've applied for the BSc (Hons) Natural Sciences but wish to take one of these routes instead, then please Ask Us.
For more information about the likelihood of non-joint honours subject combinations being timetable viable, please visit our Natural Sciences webpages.
We’re unable to accept the following combinations as they already exist as separate joint honours courses outside of Natural Sciences. If you're interested in studying one of these then please Ask Us:
Once we’ve received your application we’ll send you login details for the UG Applicant Portal. You’ll then be able to complete the form available in your portal.
When completing your subject choice form, please ensure you list your subjects in preference order. Your first choice must be from the Science (Group 1) list.
You should choose at least two subjects and no more than four, in decreasing order of preference (i.e. choice 1 is your preferred subject choice).
If you wish to study Chemistry, you must select it as one of your top two subjects.
If you receive an offer from us, we’ll include any required subjects you'll need to have studied for your first two subject choices. For more information about required subjects and the grades we'll need, please see the Entry Requirements section on our courses database.
