Aims

  • To develop further students critical understanding of the importance of growing faith in one or more particular demographic group (e.g., children, young people, the elderly, or those with learning disabilities).
  • To enable students to articulate a theological and biblical rationale for the importance of diversity within the body of Christ and in enabling others to come to Christian faith, grow in discipleship and contribute confidently to the Kingdom of God.
  • To equip students with an understanding of some of the key sociological, cultural and economic factors experienced by a certain demographic group, and how these impact upon wellbeing (e.g., mental health, educational opportunities, poverty) and mission and ministry within this demographic group.
  • To develop further an understanding of how different elements of Christian life, for example, mission, prayer, worship and/or the sacraments, influence the growth of faith in a specific demographic group and how this might be shaped accordingly.

Content

  • Where students have previously undertaken a module focusing on the same demographic group(s), the content of this module will be substantially different.
  • Developing the subject of growing faith and discipleship including biblical, theological and other perspectives. This will focus on one specific demographic group (e.g., the elderly or those with learning disabilities) or several related groups (e.g., children and families), and make use of denominational initiatives where appropriate.
  • Exploring how different elements of Christian life, for example, mission, prayer, worship and/or the sacraments, are experienced by, and shaped by, a particular demographic group (e.g., baptism and households, intergenerational worship, etc.) in different contexts.
  • Exploring the theological foundations and assumptions which underpin ministry with this group. Developing an understanding of the lived experience of some within a specific demographic group (e.g., mental health, poverty), and how this experience impacts upon, for example, pastoral care, mission, or discipleship.

  • Demonstrate a theological and biblical understanding of diversity within the body of Christ, and how this shapes one or more key Christian practices such as prayer, mission, worship and/or sacraments.

  • Reflect on practices of nurturing faith in a specific group of people, and the relationships that enable this, drawing on appropriate theological and other resources and demonstrating some critical awareness.
