Aims

  • To deepen and extend students' knowledge and understanding of the role of the subject leader within the primary school.
  • To develop an understanding of important current initiatives and curriculum legislation.
  • To support students in developing an understanding of themselves as leaders.

Content

  • Exploring the role and responsibilities of the Subject Lead and the features of effective leadership in education.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:

  • Understanding the role of subject leadership in primary schools.
  • Begin to know the key ideas related to subject leadership in the primary school.

Subject-specific Skills:

  • Develop an informed and critical awareness of the complexities of subject leadership in primary schools;
  • Critically reflect the role of subject and leadership in relation to education;
  • Evaluate and critique systems and processes in regard to subject leadership in the primary school;
  • Critically analyse literature on educational issues relevant to subject leadership in the primary context.

Key Skills:

  • Communicate ideas, principles and theories effectively in written and oral form.
  • Work collaboratively with peers.
  • Engage in peer - and self - assessment.
  • Manage time and work to deadlines.
  • Construct and sustain a reasoned argument.
  • Evaluate and make use of information from a variety of sources.
  • Engage in critical reflection in one's own professional development in preparation for transition to Early Career Teacher and beyond into subject leadership.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • Lectures and seminars will be used as appropriate to support students in developing their critical understanding of the role of the leader in the primary school.
  • All learning outcomes will be assessed appropriately via the assignment.
