Biography
I finished his PhD at Durham University in 2015, on the topic of creating clearer images of distant stars and galaxies, by using Laser Guide Stars to improve Adaptive Optics systems on the largest astronomical telescopes. After this, I kept working on the topic as a Post-doc and also started to look at improving space telescopes, using similar active technologies to make clearer images of Earth from Space.
In 2017, I left Durham and joined the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) in Munich where I worked at the Institute for Communication and Navigation, in what is now the Optical Satellite Links department. At DLR, I lead a research group that investigates how best ot overcome atmospheric turbulence when using laser communications links between ground stations, or between ground and a satellite. This involved installing and testing a new telescope at DLR - the DLR Optical Ground Station. My team designed and built a state of the art adaptive optics system that was used to correct the light recieved from a geostationary satellite, and "pre-compensate" the light that we transmitted to the satellite.
In 2024, I took the oppertunity to rejoin Durham as an Associate Professor as part of the newly formed "Space Research Centre" - an interdisciplinary team dedicated to investigating new technologies, but also new legal frameworks, governmental policies and business models for a sustainable space future. Personally, I continue to work on mitigating the impact of turbulence on Free Space Optical Communications systems, including enabling the next generation of high bandwidth satellite communications systems and investigating new ways to make small and robust optical networks via drones.
