DRMC are pleased to announce that Dr Lasse Gerrits from the Erasmus University, Rotterdam will be visiting us in October and giving a seminar on Tuesday 17th October, 1-3pm titled “Tracking Transformations over Time”!
Dr Lasse Gerrits, the Academic Director of the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies at the Erasmus University will give the following seminar:
Title: Tracking Transformations over Time
Much research in the social sciences struggles to discern unique characteristics of cases from those that recur across cases. Too often, we are left with descriptions of single cases, or with ad hoc comparisons of a small set of cases. The first approach doesn’t identify what is unique and what is not, the second may run the risk of cherry-picking results. Comparative methods, such as Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) are helpful in getting better comparisons. The problem with QCA is that is not sensitive to time. As a possible remedy, we developed Trajectory-Based Qualitative Comparative Analysis (TJ-QCA), which is a variation of QCA that incorporates different development stages of cases in the comparison. In this talk, we will present the main aspects of this research method and will demonstrate what kind of results it can generate. We will illustrate the method using our latest empirical research that compares eleven urban transformations in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. We will show how the method can be applied practically, and will also discuss how addresses complex causality.
Location: Department of Sociology, Room 113, 32, Old Elvet.
The seminar will begin with lunch at 12.30pm with the seminar scheduled to start at 1pm and finish at 3pm.
