DRMC: Book Launch for Dr Keming Yang’s book ‘Analysing Intersectionality: A toolbox of methods'.
Wednesday 28th February 2024 , 4.30pm
Abstract:During the past few decades, intersectionality has become an increasingly important issue aswell as a theoretical approach across many disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. However, methodological developments for empirical research have been much slower and less established incomparison with theoretical discussions. This book aims to bridge the gap between intersectionality as atheory and an empirical research practice. It demonstrates how existing methods could help researchersuncover new insights while analysing the intersectional effects of multiple factors on experiences ofdisenfranchisement. It firstly provides a critical examination of long standing theories and methodologiesin intersectionality research. Then it expands existing qualitative approaches by explaining the potentialbenefits and issues in analytical techniques such as qualitative comparative analysis, interaction terms ingeneralized linear regression models, multilevel models, mediation and moderation, and mixed methodsdesigns. With real world research examples, further readings, and reflective questions, it will equip thereader with the methodological tools to understand and analyse intersectionality in specific socialsettings. In this event, Dr Yang will share his motivations for producing this book, explain the meaning ofhis ‘generic’ approach, highlight the key points, and answer questions from the audience.
