The Durham Research Methods Centre in conjunction with the Centre for Visual Arts and Culture are offering a week-long course in non-extractive filmmaking. Led by filmmaker and educator Jigar Ganatra, the course will equip you with all the skills you need to devise, script, shoot, and edit high-quality film, with ethical considerations to the fore.

The main part of the course will take place in person, over full 5 days, from 16 – 20 September 2024. There will also be a self-guided preparatory editing task, for which we advise setting aside two days (please see programme here). There will also be two preliminary online workshops:

09.30-11.30, Tuesday 3 September 2024: Pre-production planning (format, structure, interview questions, etc).

09.30-11.00, Wednesday 4 September 2024: Feedback on self-guided editing task.

The course is open to all research-active staff and PhD students. Participant numbers are strictly limited to 10. In order to be accepted onto the course, you need to commit to being present throughout the full duration of the teaching week and be available for the online preparation sessions. To register your interest, please complete this form, ensuring that you obtain sign-off from your Head of Department.

Submission deadline is Wednesday 14 August 2024, and successful applicants will be notified by Friday 16 August 2024.
