A smiling woman with long wavy hair

This webinar will be held on Thursday 7 November 2024 at 7pm GMT | 11am PST | 2pm EST | 8pm CET and will be given by Dr Cher McGillivray (Bond University, Australia, and practising clinical psychologist)

In this session we will hear about moral injury experienced by non-offending parents (NOPs) of children who have experienced abuse. The presentation will explore the often painful journey NOPs face as they contend with feelings of guilt, shame, betrayal, and anger following traumatic events they were unable to prevent. Dr McGillivray will present newly developed cognitive models that suggest that these parents’ posttraumatic cognitions can lead to PTSD, complex PTSD (CPTSD), depression, and other mental health challenges. Building on a series of studies, she will discuss the empirical research that highlights the critical role of negative self-beliefs and isolation in predicting PTSD, and how certain posttraumatic cognitions differentiate between PTSD and CPTSD. She will introduce key adaptive coping strategies like self-compassion, hope, and positive reappraisal, which foster post-traumatic growth, revealing the strength and resilience of parents navigating these challenges. This session aims to offer an understanding of moral injury theory's application, aiming to enrich therapeutic approaches for NOPs in ways that move beyond abuse-specific symptoms, empowering them on a path toward healing and growth.
