Workshop aimed at academics with a shared interest in weather.
The Weather Wonderings workshop brought together 25 academics spanning various career stages and disciplines with a shared interest in weather. Expertly curated by our Creative Facilitator Mary Robson, the afternoon involved a mix of presentations, provocations and discussion around life’s varied and fluctuating weather worlds.
“Come with questions, and leave with more questions” was our guiding principle, as we viewed and reflected on provocations from Professor Jennifer Mason (University of Manchester), Dr Barry Sheils (Durham University), Dr Russell Hitchings and Antonia Hodgson (University College London), Dr Gareth Hoskins (University of Aberystwyth), Dr Tonya Rooney (Australian Catholic University, Canberra) and Dr Cassandra Phoenix (Durham University).
These contributions included topics as diverse as the social function of weather talk, representing living the weather through film, tensions between objective measurements and subjective experience of weather; wind chill, bushfires, intergenerational weather encounters, research methods for weather research… and so much more.
The workshop provided a creative and supportive online space for weather wondering, continuing throughout the afternoon and into the fading winter light.
