Funding success for new project announced

How do older prisoners experience movement? How can this knowledge be used to support their health and wellbeing by providing opportunities to move more? With the number of people in prisons over the age of 60 at an all-time high and set to increase, these are timely and important questions that will be addressed in a new project funded by Spectrum Community Health CIC and led by Professor Cassie Phoenix (Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences).

This funding will support a PhD studentship starting in October 2023, which will benefit from co-supervision by Dr Katie di-Sebastiano (Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences), Dr Kate O’Brien (Department of Sociology) with Mary Robson (Institute of Medical Humanities), Dr Pip Hearty (Spectrum Community Health) and Professor Brett Smith (Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences) as advisors to the project. Working closely with the Moving Bodies Lab, this research will provide opportunities for methodological and conceptual development relating to experiences of embodiment, ageing and moving in secure settings.
