Fellows of the Institute for Medical Humanities invited to pitch ideas to develop and lead two new Research Themes.

We warmly invite Fellows of the Institute for Medical Humanities to pitch their ideas to develop and lead two new Research Themes.

These research themes will complement the current Research Themes in development:

  • Trauma, Violence and Memory (leads: Katrin Wehling-Giorgi and Corinne Saunders)
  • Environmental Health, Climate and Wellbeing (lead: Angela Marques Filipe)
  • Beginning and End of Life (lead: Samantha Halliday)

Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for two new Research Themes are invited from IMH Fellows by Monday 19 May 2025.

EOIs should outline a vision for developing the Research Theme within the Medical Humanities with activities running over a 2-year period initially.

The IMH expects to support five Research Themes in total for the period 2025 to 2027, with potential to extend the Research Theme beyond this time.

These new Research Themes will replace the existing 6 IMH research strands and develop alongside programmes of activity funded by Discovery Research Platform for Medical Humanities until August 2030.

With the current IMH Research Strategy due to be refreshed this year, the new research themes will help to shape and steer the direction of travel for the IMH and provide an important anchor for our strategic plans going forward ensuring the future sustainability of the IMH.

Research Themes will provide a strategic focus for the IMH, but we also envisage continuing to support ad-hoc events and other activities to engage the medical humanities community at Durham.

Funding and support for Research Themes

Each successful Research Theme will be able to access a budget of £2,500 to support research activities and events until 2027.

Support will also be available from the IMH Executive and professional services teams funded by the Platform. This includes specialist expertise in research development and partnerships, communications, and creative facilitation, as well as support from the Operations team for event coordination and administration (booking rooms, travel, accommodation, catering).
