The Global Policy Institute hosted a workshop on “Climate Security at a Crossroads: New Directions in Research and Policy” at Durham University across 19-20 January 2023. Over two intensive days, ten international experts gathered in Durham to discuss cutting-edge research on how climate change impacts contemporary security policy and discourse. New and ongoing research was presented that assessed evolving climate security approaches by states, including UK, India, Germany, France, and the US. Other discussions took place on the politics of geoengineering, new forms of “ecological power”, how to be critical about “the climate insecurity consensus”, and developing new directions in climate security research.
On 19 January, 2023, as part of the workshop agenda, GPI also sponsored the book launch of Climate Security in the Anthropocene - Exploring the Approaches of United Nations Security Council Member-States (Springer). The launch event, which took place at Durham Castle, brought four of the book’s editors (Judith Nora Hardt, Cameron Harrington, Franziskus von Lucke, and Adrien Estève) together in a roundtable discussion with Dr. Oliver Belcher (Durham University). Thanks to all who participated and attended, and congratulations to the editors for this wonderful achievement!
