COP28 Follow-up Event With Durham University Delegates

On the 13th of February 2024, Four of Durham University's COP28 delegates gathered in the Great Hall at Durham Castle to share their views on COP28 at the COP28 Debrief Event. The event was a huge success with around 250 attendees including undergraduate and postgraduate students and a big percentage of guests from the local community. The event was organised by ECO DU, Greenspace, Durham Climate Society, and Palaeontological Society. 

The panel consisted of Professor Andrew Russel from the Department of Anthropology, Professor Chris Stokes from the Department of Geography, Professor Laura Marlsiliani from the Department of Economics and Ghulam Mustafa Kamran from Durham Law School. 

The discussions covered a variety of themes around climate change. Professor Andrew Russel shared his experiences regarding his journey to COP28 by road and emphasised promoting climate-friendly travel. Professor Chris Stokes shared his research focus and concerns in relation to the impact of climate change on the cryosphere. Professor Laura Marsilliani shared her thoughts on climate-relevant economic measures and the impacts and effectiveness of the voluntary market mechanisms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Ghulam Mustafa Kamran shared his observations by highlighting the weaknesses of the climate change regime and by underlining the emerging and increasing global trend of climate litigation.

There will be more pre-COP and post-COP events this year.
