The whole Condensed Matter Physics research section (CMP) in Physics at Durham came together for an Away Day at Ushaw House for training and development activities to strengthen our research capabilities and support career progression.
The programme of events for academic staff, early career researchers and postgraduate students began the day in the elegant surroundings of the Parlour before moving on to EDI training, which was focused on respect at work. Following this everyone moved to “get to know you” section between academic and research students in the form of Interactive speed dating.
The afternoon session was split into two, with the academic staff engaging in the CMP section Strategic planning and Collaboration discussions while PGR students gave talks on their academic journey so far and discussed the Next steps of their careers with external guests’ input. Finally dinner was served in refectory for a last socialisation session, before the journey home. The day was lively and informative for all, hopefully not dampened by the weather!
