We have been involved in several collaborations with theatre companies interested in how scholarly research into conscious experience, particularly the science of autobiographical memory, can be used to enhance the immersive experience of a theatre production.

Essay on memory in theatre programme

The programme for the RSC's new production of As You Like It in 2023 featured an essay by Charles Fernyhough on how memory works in the play

Charles worked with the cast of Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party in a West End production in 2018. You can read his programme essay here.

This blog post describes how ideas about memory fed into an innovative production of Pinter's Old Times, directed by Ian Rickson. You can also read Charles's programme essay

Charles also worked on Ian Rickson's production of Jez Butterworth's The River, talking to the cast about memory in both London and New York.
