Biophysical Sciences members Dr. Ting-Yu Lin from the Department of Biosciences and Dr. Francesco Boselli from the Departments of Biosciences and Engineering have each received a Springboard Award to support their biomedical research. The Awards

Awarded by the Academy of Medical Sciences in collaboration with the Government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, the Wellcome Trust, and the British Heart Foundation, the AMS Springboard Award supports early career biomedical scientists across the UK to tackle critical health issues.

Understanding the 'Messenger' of the Cell

Dr. Ting-Yu Lin prize supports her work which has the potential to combat cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. Her research focuses on RNA modification, in particular an enzyme called Pseudouridine Synthase 7, which modifies RNA. Errors in this modification can affect protein production, potentially leading to disorders or cancers.

In collaboration with Dr. David Doupé from the Department of Biosciences, Dr. Lin will use fruit flies to study the enzyme's function and develop therapies for certain cancers and neurodegenerative diseases.

Towards New Approaches to Treating Lung Disease

Dr. Boselli will examine motile cilia, the hair-like structures lining parts of our lungs and nose. He will use a high-speed camera and microscope to observe cilia movement in slow motion, analysing how particles move through or get trapped between them.

Dr. Boselli aims to enhance understanding of lung infections and unlock new therapies based on effective nanomedicine delivery.
