Abstract

This talk explores the nature of expertise—how it is defined, applied, and communicated—and whether AI through large language models (LLMs) can replicate expert reasoning. Expertise is more than recalling facts; it involves judgment, uncertainty, and ethical responsibility.

We examine whether LLMs can assess evidence, make probabilistic judgments, and express uncertainty like human experts. While AI can mimic reasoning, it lacks intuition, lived experience, and accountability. This raises a deeper question: can true expertise exist without the human qualities that shape it?

Beyond AI’s technical abilities, this discussion touches on what it means to be human. Unlike LLMs, human cognition is shaped by emotions, ethics, and social responsibility.
