Associate Professor Dr Will Brittain, from our Department of Chemistry, has been named as a recipient of a prestigious national fellowship scheme.
Will has received an award of £1.63million towards a project which will conduct research to make enhancements to the synthesis of molecules that contain fluorine.
His aim is to grow and enhance existing facilities at Durham to find new ways to selectively and sustainably make target molecules, so they are more scalable for real world applications.
The findings could lead to improvements in the production of everyday items such as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and materials. Ultimately with the hope of driving down costs for society.
Led by Will, the project will involve a number of academic experts at Durham as well as an international expert in fluorine chemistry at Ghent University.
It is a great honour to be awarded a Future Leaders Fellowship. I am ecstatic and really looking forward to building my team and pursuing this research project. Fluorinated molecules are critical to modern life, and I am passionate about designing new methods to make them.
The Future Leaders Fellowship scheme provides long-term support to early career researchers to enable them to tackle ambitious programmes or multidisciplinary questions.
As part of the project, Will and his team will work together with industry partners to help take their discoveries and make them scalable to enable real world impacts.
UKRI’s Future Leaders Fellowships offer long-term support to outstanding researchers, helping them turn bold ideas into innovations that improve lives and livelihoods in the UK and beyond. These fellowships continue to drive excellence and accelerate the journey from discovery to public benefit. I wish them every success
