People standing in front of flags, some with awards

Vice-Chancellor and Warden, Professor Karen O’Brien accepted an award in recognition of an exceptional contribution to strengthening and deepening the UK-Indonesia relationship.

Professor O’Brien accepted the honour at The Ambassadors’ 75th Anniversary Awards at the Indonesian embassy. The event marked the finale of a remarkable year celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and the UK.

The theme of ‘People, Planet, Prosperity and Peace’, reflected the shared visions and joint endeavours of our two Governments in addressing multi-faceted challenges of our time.

As the UK works towards signing of a new UK-Indonesia Strategic Partnership this year. We look forward to supporting this milestone, together with our partners, further building people to people connections and capacity in research and education.

Joint research projects

Durham has been working closely with Indonesian partners for many years including improving health impacts of volcanic ash and working around challenges in managing flooding.

The Heath Interventions in Volcanic Eruptions (HIVE) project was led by Professor Claire Horwell (Professor of Geohealth at Durham). It focused on effective respiratory protection for community use. Study findings were incorporated into Indonesia’s public information showing how people could protect themselves from inhaling ash and how to properly fit a facemask.

Java Flood One was another of our significant research collaborations with Indonesia. It was led by Professor Simon Mathias in Earth Sciences, in partnership with colleagues from The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and working with various government departments. The project created a set of medium-term flood forecast (MRFF) tools for the urban centres of Jakarta, Bandung and Surakarta on the island of Java, Indonesia.

We are proud to be a small part of this flourishing UK-Indonesia relationship and have been honoured to welcome students and colleagues who will take forward crucially important bilateral priorities for both nations such as climate, energy transitions, sustainable development and technology transfer).

We continue to strengthen our relationship with Indonesia and our partnerships with Indonesian universities.

We look to build on this collaborative foundation to explore further opportunities in areas of shared strength such as energy transitions and cultural heritage.

We look forward to continuing to deepen our relationships with Indonesian partners as we work towards shared goals and the next 75 years.
