Durham Global Week 2025 will take place from Saturday 1 – Sunday 9 March. The theme for this year’s Global Week is ‘Culture – Community – Connect’ and the university warmly invites all staff, students, and members of the wider community to join in the wide range of activities taking place to recognise, celebrate and learn from the international, multilingual, and multicultural diversity that defines us as a global university.
This year’s programme includes over 80 events taking place both in Durham and across the world at our Durham Days alumni celebrations. The varied range of events, from panel discussions and lectures to performances and exhibitions, offers opportunities to engage with Durham's international impact and diverse community.This week-long celebration recognises our diverse international student and staff communities and the global impact of our research and partnerships. It showcases Durham's diversity and global connections through a series of events focused on research, languages, culture, and global citizenship.
The week will be launched on Saturday 1 March with the Global Goals Summit. This signature event, hosted at Stephenson College, brings together sixth form students from local schools and colleges, University students and students from our International Study Centre to explore solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
On Sunday 2 March, Durham Students’ Union will host WorldFest, organised by Durham International Students Association, this is fantastic celebration of the diverse range of cultures represented within our student community. Students, staff and the local community will be welcomed at this festival style event, where over 25 different international student societies will share their culture and traditions through food stalls, music, dance performances and cultural exhibits.
Students will also be showcasing their talents throughout the week with an international photography competition and exhibition.
These events encourage students from the diverse range of cultures at Durham to share their experiences and learn from each other.
Academic conversations will take place at a thought-provoking series of lectures and panel discussions throughout the week, addressing critical issues like sustainability and inequality. Stephenson College will be hosting a one-day, mini-conference on the subject of Internationalisation at Home, with the aim of supporting members of staff in the development of Durham’s approach to the topic.
International Women’s Day
Global Week will also incorporate the University’s celebration of International Women’s Day, 8 March, with a range of events including a Panel Discussion for female staff and students, featuring four of its senior female leaders: Vice-Chancellor Karen O’Brien, Academic Registrar Monika Nangia, Grey College Principal Sonia Virdee, and University Secretary Amanda Wilcox.
The week culminates in the annual Durham Global Awards ceremony, honouring outstanding contributions by staff, students, local stakeholders and alumni to the university's internationalisation efforts. Awards across 10 categories will be presented at the celebratory event at the Oriental Museum.
