With the winter break approaching, we’re excited to invite you to embrace the festive spirit with our Student Performing Arts.

Our talented students have been hard at work preparing a range of performances to spread the festive cheer for everyone this year. We’ve picked out a small handful to usher in the festive season – check out the full range of musical and theatrical performances through the links at the bottom. 

Music to brighten your season 

Set in a stunning historic backdrop, a diverse range of musical performances await. Whether traditional or contemporary, we have a musical experiences for every taste. Come and celebrate the festive season at St Oswald’s Church with the Gospel Choir for their Michaelmas Showcase ‘Exultation! A Christmas Celebration!’. Enjoy lively Gospel classics and Christmas favourites with uplifting vocal harmonies.  

students singingFor those of you who prefer a smaller setting, our Chamber Choir presents ‘The Waiting Sky’ at St Godric’s Church, delving into the contemplative beauty of winter through British and European choral works. 

Jazzy Christmas will get you moving to the music. Join our Big Band and Jazz Orchestra for an evening of festive classics, blazing solos and Christmas cheer at the Sir Thomas Allen Assembly Rooms Theatre. We challenge you not to dance along. 

If all you want for Christmas is festive a cappella, be sure to join Foot Notes A Cappella for ‘All I Want for Christmas’ at St Oswald’s Church. An evening of festive classics, contemporary chart-toppers and choral masterpieces awaits.  

A night at the theatre 

If you’re looking to immerse yourself in the magic of the stage, why not enjoy a captivating theatrical performance this festive season? 

Show logoLaugh Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, by Shellshock! Improvised Comedy at the Students’ Union delivers their signature blend of scenes and sketches. Prepare for audience participation in this entirely unscripted evening of laughter. 

Lastly our Classical Theatre group offers a fresh, innovative take on Christopher Marlowe’s classic ‘Doctor Faustus’. Come along and experience this gripping tale of power, temptation, and tragedy. 

In our community 

It’s not just our students who are ready for the festive season. Join our Staff Chamber Choir at the Botanic Garden for a festive ‘Music for Christmas’ performance, filled with holiday cheer and seasonal melodies! Their performance is due to start at 1pm in the Visitor Centre on Tuesday 10 December.  

Find out how Christmas is celebrated around the world and decorate ceramic Christmas decorations to take home in our Countdown to Christmas Craft Workshop at the Oriental Museum.  

Looking ahead, get ready for the Lunar New Year Lantern Festival! Make tissue paper lanterns, enjoy Year of the Snake crafts, sample New Year snacks, and join us for a late-night opening at the Oriental Museum with stories, music, and more.
