New students outside the Cathedral celebrating

We’ve officially welcomed our new cohort of students during our annual Matriculation ceremonies held in Durham Cathedral.

Vice-Chancellor and Warden, Professor Karen O’Brien warmly welcomed new students to Durham. As these students begin their journey, they join a vibrant academic community, as well as the broader community in our beautiful historic city.

The new students were met by staff and returning students from their respective Colleges, who celebrated their arrival with banners, music and singing.

What is Matriculation?

Matriculation is a significant celebration - a rite of passage as students formally join Durham University. It refers to the official registration of students on the University’s roll, marking their integration into the academic community.

This special day signifies the beginning of a new chapter for students and highlights the unique experience of being part of the Durham community.

Welcome to Durham, a distinguished centre of learning since 1832. Its inspiring alumni each took their time to discover their strengths and passions. Take your time to explore all that Durham has to offer. Embrace the opportunity to define yourself and enjoy being part of this great University.

Professor Karen O’Brien
Vice-Chancellor and Warden of Durham University

A memorable day

The Matriculation ceremonies took place on Wednesday 2 October and Thursday 3 October.

Students participated in groups organised by their Colleges and celebrated their official membership within their College communities. As part of the ceremony, one undergraduate and one postgraduate student from each College signed the Matriculation book on behalf of the new intake.
