In a new development for our highly rated Mathematical Sciences department, Dr Yohance Osborne is set to join us as one of the first recipients of the prestigious Royal Society Career Development Fellowship.
This exciting appointment not only bolsters our research capabilities but also marks a significant step towards fostering diversity in STEM academia.
Dr Osborne's journey to Durham is nothing short of remarkable.
Fresh from completing his PhD at University College London, he has already made strong impressions in the mathematical community with his innovative work on Mean Field Games (MFG).
His doctoral thesis introduced a novel class of MFG systems, providing new insights into modelling equilibria in large population games of stochastic optimal control.
Starting this October, Dr Osborne will embark on an ambitious research project titled ‘Numerical Methods for Mean Field Games with Non-separable Hamiltonians.’
This cutting-edge work promises to push the boundaries of MFG applications, potentially revolutionising our understanding of complex social and economic phenomena.
Dr Osborne's appointment is part of a larger initiative by the Royal Society to address underrepresentation in UK STEM academia.
As one of only eight researchers selected for this pilot programme, he stands at the forefront of a movement to create a more inclusive academic landscape.
His presence will not only enrich our research capabilities but also serve as an inspiration to aspiring mathematicians from all backgrounds.
This appointment underscores our commitment to fostering diversity and excellence in equal measure.
Our Department of Mathematical Sciences is ranked in the top 10 in the UK in the Complete University Guide 2025. Visit our Mathematical Sciences webpages for more information on our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
