A new online exhibition has been published telling stories from the Kurdistani Jewish diaspora.
The often-emotional tales recount the experiences of Kurdistani Jews forced to abandon their homes and relinquish their citizenship to move to Israel in the 1950s.
Since then, many people in the community have sought to build new lives in their new country, while maintaining their old traditions.
With two grants from the Council for British Research in the Levant, Dr Bahar Baser, from our School of Government and International Affairs, researched their stories and experiences.
This included a 2023 visit to Israel, where Bahar and her team met members of the community and attended cultural events.
Our Museums team then worked with Bahar and colleagues to produced a online exhibition, featuring images and stories. Bahar hopes it will encourage more people to share their own experiences of displacement, and awareness will grow further.
Bahar is a Professor of Political Science and International Relations, and a member of Pro:NE, a network of the five universities in North East England aimed at widening access and participation for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic students and staff in postgraduate research.
She was recently named co-winner of the British International Studies Association’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Prize 2024.
