The first public exhibition of art from new, women-led public art collective, STRIKE, can be seen in the outdoor exhibition space, outside the Bill Bryson Library this summer.
STRIKE use public art to take up space without apology, saying farewell to the many ‘sorrys’ of the women who walked before them. The images in the exhibition showcase members’ creative, colourful statements, sharing their values, interests and creative practice.
These snapshots in time bring together the many voices of the collective, laying foundations for future collaborations across County Durham. The exhibition reflects the very core of what STRIKE is, to be a supportive, inclusive creative community which celebrates the value each member brings.
One of the aims of the STRIKE, is to make the places in which we live feel welcoming and inclusive. The artists work to encourage others, to recognise that everyone’s unique voice and creativity has a place.
As home to one of the richest cultural collections in the North East, including Asian art, modern art, manuscripts and archives, the University is delighted to welcome this new exhibition.
This exhibition is in collaboration with Durham University Art Collections and can be viewed free of charge until 25 September 2024.
