BIG BANG Street Cosmos, Art Science out reach event, child in blue light

Durham astrophysicists are working with three County Durham communities and arts charity, No More Nowt, to deliver ‘BIG BANG’ a free, summer fair for families – all about space. The event will take place on Saturday 29 June at TCR Hub in Barnard Castle.

Visitors will have the opportunity to meet and chat to Durham astrophysicists about space and the possibility of life on other planets, as part of this new community arts and science initiative. There will be a full day of activities including rocket launches, bouncy castles, face-painting, live music, space-themed circus performances, and an immersive trip across the galaxy! The event is free but visitors are required to book a time slot in advance.

Three County Durham community centres - Blackhall Community Centre, Gaunless Gateway, Bishop Auckland and Teesdale Community Resource (TCR) Hub, Barnard Castle - are working with world-leading astrophysicists from Durham University, and community arts charity No More Nowt, to create BIG BANG.

Visitors can discover how pioneering research at Durham University and innovation at NET Park, Sedgefield, County Durham are at the forefront of space exploration and technology, and how an estimated 10,000 new space industry jobs will be created in the region by 2030.

BIG BANG is part of a major County Durham campaign to use cultural events to put communities right in the middle of these exciting space-tech developments.

The event brings together two likeminded projects; ‘Street Cosmos’, led by Durham University, a collaboration that puts world leading astrophysics into community centres in County Durham and ‘Light Years’, part of the new Place Partnership led by Durham County Council, that builds on County Durham’s shortlisted UK City of Culture bid. This transformative initiative aims to drive growth by cultivating talent, enhancing creative skills, breaking down barriers, fostering ambitious collaboration and inspiring future leaders.
